A brief overview of South Africa's social, political and economic past is provided as a theoretical background relating to the development of local artistic expression in the field of visual art. This evolution is highlighted by various applicable examples taken from local art publications. The investigation does not adhere to any single genre of artistic expression nor does it attempt to be holistically inclusive, but it does pertain a specific period in history. It provides a general summary of seminal events that shaped the history of South Africa's artistic community, document important developments with the scope of the research as well as creating awareness of our rich artistic heritage.
